The one thing Sarah got right in her interview preparation was the need for a portfolio. Without a portfolio, you have no proof that you are as good at coding as you claim to be, which immediately puts you at a disadvantage. The interviewer has to resort to asking you “code trivia questions” to see if you can do the job.

These random, complex questions test how much you know about coding languages and techniques. Your interviewer will expect textbook answers to their code trivia questions. If you forget anything, you’ll miss out on the job.

With a portfolio, on the other hand, you can show your interviewer just what you’re capable of. The interview will be about the programs you have developed, not random trivia.

A portfolio, then, is an incredible advantage when breaking into this industry, and yet, most new coders don’t have one when starting out.

That fact should encourage you. It means you can distinguish yourself from the competition. When you walk into the development manager’s office with a portfolio, you communicate that you’re motivated, capable, and already experienced in creating a professional final product.

The interviewer won’t have to quiz you on code trivia to find out if you can solve their problems. You’ll have already proved it.

The fact is, though, that all those advantages in the interview disappear if your portfolio is stuffed with useless, silly programs.
